The Tubbataha Reef has been declared to be one of UNESCO heritage site and any damages on it would mean disaster.
It was just recently when a US naval ship grounded the site. The US government is held liable of the damages. In fact, it was found out that ship “entered without a permit” and it clearly violated section 19 of Republic Act 10067 or the Tubbataha Reefs National Park (TRNP) Act of 2009.
The Navy officials believed that there is no other way of solving the problem and prevent any further damage to the corals but to cut the ship into pieces.
As of the moment, the rescue officials are removing the toxic materials inside the ship and oil spill is very unlikely to happen. “We will strip it out beforehand. We’ll work to salvage any parts that can be salvaged”, says Lt. Anthony Falvo, a U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet spokesman in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The ship is worth millions but the reef is priceless. Destroying the ship is the best thing to do than destroying the reef that took millions of years to form.
The reef is just one of the natural wonders in the Philippines that have been the reason why a lot of foreigners are into living in the Philippines for good. It is considered to be one of the perfect places of retirement in the world.
